The Change  

On March 12^th I interviewed my grandfather Gagik Gasparyan. Gagik is 72 years old and he was born in Yerevan, Armenia at the 8^th Hospital. Gagik lived in Armenia his whole life until my family moved to America so my grandfather moved with us. The reason he came here was so he can live a better life with his family and so that he could also see his grandchildren. At Armenia Gagik was a good person and he also learned very well. Gagik worked as a computer engineer in Armenia. He had worked there for a long time until it was time for him to come to America. Gagik has lived here in America for a long period of time and has gone back to Armenia just to visit. But he is thinking about moving back to his country and live there.

In my life there has been couple of changes that I’ve gone through, but the most significant change that I have seen is the change of the computers. The computers have changed so much and have become more advanced than they ever where. In Armenia computers made our everyday life easier. We got to do things that we would have never experienced. When I was young and the teacher used to give us das (homework) to do, we would always use the books to find something, and also had to read a lot of the things that we were learning about. But now there are easier ways like the internet and the Encyclopedia on the computer. I think that this is a big and wonderful change. People could now just have everything in their hands. When the computers just came out they were really big and you couldn’t do much on it like you can do on today’s computers, but as the years go on the computers get smaller and more powerful.

The computers are a really good thing and also a bad thing at the same time. The good thing is that they could have a better future with it and would learn a lot from it. And the bad thing is that they sometimes wouldn’t use the computer for the things that it needed to be used for. The kids would mostly play games on it. But for the kids that use it wisely they are making their future better and it is in their hands. I was born in 1932 and when the first computer ever came out I was eager to go and get one and have a career from it. I had a really good time with the computers and I want one now, but I can’t have one anymore because I am too old now and don’t have any time for computers. And when I look in peoples houses, everyone has a computer in their house. In my time people just couldn’t afford computers because they were expensive and people who had them were really lucky to have one because it made things for them easier. Right now I see my grandson Arthur doing things with his computer that I have never seen in my life. He makes so many pictures realistic and could make the things that he has drawn move around and do things that he wants the picture to do.

The reason I don’t want one now its because I’m really old, there is no need for me to use a computer also like I said earlier on, I am too old and I wont be able to understand how to work a computer, but teenagers in now a days need one because they can do a lot with computers and their future is in their hands and working with computers will make them reach to their dream. As my grandson Arthur tells me that so many teenagers cheat from the computer because they could get all the information that they need for their homework’s.

The kids now are doing things that they should do because they are messing up their whole future from it. Do good like me so that I could support your family and wouldn’t have to worry about money. I had done so well in school and in everything else that I didn’t really care about money. When something was worth 500 daram (1 dollar) I would give the person 5,000 daram. In Armenia I was the only one who had a computer from all my family members or just friends. None of them had a computer so they would just come to my house and did what they wanted to do. When the first computer came out in Armenia it was called Macintosh and it was an amazing computer. As the years passed by, the computers had improved and they get smaller computers called laptops. Right now the computers are cheaper and much better.
