Interview with my Church Member- Jay C Kim
As a young man Jay C Kim arrives in USA from Korea in 1962 and attends US Naval Post Graduate School. His life of 71years more than half of his life he has been encountered with the computer. He worked for City Of LA Department Of water and power working as the director of computer system. He noticed the gradual change from when the computer first come out and to the computer we use at home. We can find computers at home, business, and school today at home Jay C Kim’s wife, three children, and six grandchildren’s use this system too. The computer’s invention has given us a great benefit in our children’s today and in the future, it is also very fast, accurate, and practice for many jobs. Jay C Kim tells me about this device that he has encountered had influenced our lives so much that now it became our greatest change in this world.
1962, I came to United States and I attend US Naval postgraduate school in Monetary, California. Then I retired from the navy and was working for the City Of LA Department of Water and Power as a director of computer systems. I worked there for 33years, which means I was working with computers for33 years.
The first computer came out in about 1940s. The heat generator in this computer is so humongous that they had to always install like a big fan and air conditioning to cool off the computer room. Even though the physical size is that big the computer didn’t do much. Early parts of 90s became really small and compact that had memory size was about forty thousand forty kilobyte now you buy computers that have memory size of one or two gigabyte. It’s so funny how large corporation it’s a used to be. When you are asking for computer departments it will be a huge whole one floor and there is a big sign named computer department door, these days if you go to company asks for computer division it’s a small office in a one floor because the computers they have is very small.
In 1988 the computer became very general use at home. My wife and my three kid they all been using computer in that time. That the personal computers so a they are not involved as much as I get involved in a real world were large scale computer systems but they been working with small computers. They would be mostly using word processing, playing games and some spreadsheets and applications. In 1988, Internet was not around; it was available around middle of 1990s or 95.
People would sometimes ask if the invention of a computer can be a problem, but I don’t think its any problem because it really helping us to quite a bit. Ti is quite a bit difficult for older folks when they are never introduced about computer and even society is changing into the computer all processors. Sometimes it’s becoming difficult for them to understand. Before all the service was human to human so the person can explain all the sides stories to whatever people are telling it to their situation. Well they will probably ask “ I need some help I got to do this “and people in the stand in the other side listen to all that and all those thing and obviously they work better than the computers and dealing with those things. Although that for some people it’s a little bit complex. But for most of the new generations and even my grandsons, his is four years old; he will sit in front of the computer and type in Nick Junior and play games. A four years old, he doesn’t even know what he is pushing on the keys but he became very automated a he even know that something doesn’t work, or it doesn’t come on he goes to the modem and he unplugs it and set up the internet again, Computer is so much systemized and there is tremendous applications going right now trying to sell applications to help our lives better it only gives us huge advantage to society and to human beings. Even if you look at the health side of it all the very dedicated surgery like brain surgery they cannot perform a surgery without computer. Human hands and exility of sergeant has a limit of cutting very precision cut, but if relied on a computer to do that, they’ll do that in billions of inch will cut that so that kind of precisions in other it helps a in medical a health side of industry and that kind of things really extends. Actually extends way of what computer can do million of what human can do.
Children’s really need a lot of teaching aid. A computer is good at a displaying and showing the illustrations in computer programs and computer programs photos or internet information’s, those things children’s can easily look at it so the teacher doesn’t have to do a lot of resource to maintain them for example. Like a medical school they have called it the patient simulator they can actually do the most of practice like in surveying the body without killing actually human body on the simulator. There are monitors that are going on the computer so then if you do something and the patient dies then he dies but it is a computer patient so you don’t have to kill people to do that so it helps quite a bit. Same for an air pilot they have guys actually flying in that so if he does something then your plane crashed, actually he didn’t crash the actual plane it was a computer plane.
Computer are more faster and convenient and more accurate. Theses days all the recorded about you and about me in the government is very accurate. Accuracy is one really important thing and also speed is, even you go to supermarket. Before a 1960s the bar code systems wasn’t out in my neighbor’s supermarket. We were always looking for chaser that remembers a lot of price for tag price tags. If I line up there and I go out lot faster because some people especially the new cash register ones they flip through notebooks to find the price and they make lot of mistakes in price. Now days we have the bar code so all we have to do is scan those things and the price is accurate. Those things really help us in our life. Now you go in and out in the supermarket without any problems.
The change in a computer or invention of computer change is more than other fields out there.
There’s a lots of changes in culture and human society but some of the stuff would be like a fashion, it changes and it changes in trends and back and forth back and forth, like changes change all changes. Like a computer, pick back from the old telephone in old days telephone changed a quite a bit of a our appear and society appear but a the computer is more so the telephone is only for talking for communicate but because of computer more wireless came out later, you don’t have to lay out all those wires you can do lot of things with the computer while things get automated. I saw lot of the computer applications like a the psychotherapy kind of computer you talk to the computer you can ask questions and these computers all consoling instead of human beings you know for some people it’s hard to get it but actually computers are better then human being sometimes.
